若くして初代歌川豊国に入門し、その才能を高く評価された国貞。役者絵を中心に美人画や「源氏絵」を手がけ、浮世絵界で多くの作品を残し、春画は40点以上制作し、芯の強い妖艶な女性像を描いた。巧みな構図と多彩な場面設定で、物語性豊かな作品を多数描いた。
本作『花鳥余情吾妻源氏(かちょうよじょうあづまげんじ)』は、『艶紫娯拾餘帖（えんしごじゅうよじょう）』(天保６年)、『正寫相生源氏（しょううつしあいおいげんじ）』(嘉永４年)とともに、『源氏物語』を引用した作品で、国貞「三源氏」と呼ばれ人気が高い。さらに多色摺木版画の頂点と称されるほど、彫摺の見事な技術が光っている。

この図は『源氏物語』「若菜上」に登場する女三宮と猫の故事に基づいている。猫が逃げようとして御簾を持ち上げた瞬間、御簾の奥にいた源氏の妻・女三宮の姿がちらりと見えた。この一瞬の出来事が、かねてから女三宮に想いを寄せていた若公卿・柏木の恋心をいっそう燃え上がらせるきっかけとなった、物語の中でも重要な場面。

Utagawa Kunisada entered the studio of the first-generation Utagawa Toyokuni at a young age, and his talent was highly praised. He produced a large number of works in the ukiyo-e world, focusing on actor prints, bijin-ga (images of beautiful women), and Genji-e (illustrations inspired by The Tale of Genji). Kunisada created over 40 shunga prints, portraying women with strong, captivating allure. His masterful compositions and varied scene settings brought rich narrative depth to his works.

This piece, “Kachō Yojō: Azuma Genji”, is part of Kunisada’s celebrated Genji series, along with “Enshi Gojūyojō” (Tenpō 6) and “Shō Utsushi Aioi Genji” (Kaei 4), all inspired by The Tale of Genji. These works, known collectively as Kunisada’s “Three Genji,” were highly popular. The piece also demonstrates the peak of multi-color woodblock printing, showcasing exceptional carving and printing techniques.

The illustration depicts a scene from The Tale of Genji, “Wakana no Ue,” involving Onna San no Miya (the Third Princess) and a cat. At the moment the cat tried to escape and lifted the misu (bamboo blinds), the wife of Genji, Onna San no Miya, was briefly glimpsed behind it. This fleeting moment further ignited the romantic feelings of the young nobleman Kashiwagi, who had long admired her, making it a significant scene in the story.
